Stefan Ahlblad, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, SAFA
Stefan Ahlblad is an architect currently with active registration in Massachusetts and New York. He is a the author of Boston Architecture and Landmarks, a book designed for self-guided walks in downtown Boston and Cambridge.
He received his architecture degree in 1973 from
Helsinki University of Technology. After graduation
Stefan worked in Finland as project architect and designer and project architect on a teachers' college, middle/ high school projects, religious buildings and multi-family housing projects.
In 1979 Stefan moved permanently to the US and became involved in the design of medical facilities at the firm of NBBJ in Seattle where he was a member as design in the project team for the new VA-hospital in Seattle. Many years later he again worked for NBBJ this time in Los Angeles where he worked as the lead designer for a new outpatient clinic for St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California.
Most of Stefan's work on hospital, clinics and research laboratories was with the firm of Russo+Sonder Architects in New York from 1982 to 1990. As an Associate at the firm he worked as lead designer for a number of medical facilities in the New York, New Jerswy and Connecticut. His work here include a clinic for McGuire Air Force base in New Jersey and the Navy Headquarters and Community building on Staten Island in New York (later converted for different uses including a visitor center for the nearby historic site). His prime involvement at Russo+Sonder, however, was as the designer for new medical buildings for Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.
After relocating to the Boston area in 1994, he has taught architecture first at Wentworth Institute of Technology and later at Boston Architectural College and designed private residents, worked as a medical planning consultant, worked for the firm DHK as project architect on a variety of transportation buildings including South Station subway station in Boston. At Ellenzweig Architects Stefan worked as consultant coordinator on a new laboratory building for Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.
Stefan is married to Louise and has a daughter Hannah, currently in graduate school. He is a past President of Finlandia Foundation, Boston and currently a board member of The Scandinavian Charitable Society of Greater Boston/ Scandinavian Living and Cultural Center.
